Thanks for opening up the issue.

I just tested your example in Safari (macOS) but it doesn't show any video or fallback image.
Have you tried the official demo?

It shouldn't play the video at all on small touch devices (e.g. smartphones), instead, it should use a fallback image. To prevent battery drain. It wasn't even possible 4 years ago, to have in-line autoplay video on iOS.

I should rewrite this package, by adding some more features and options for this new age, where videos on smartphones are actually a thing.

Regarding image format (fallback)
Sure, people can use any image format as a fallback, the example uses jpg. It's a good tip!
