I think expecting Bash 4+ should be a thing by now.
Anyways, there are likely some options for the Bash 3 scenario as well. See https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/332132/move-subshell-output-into-an-array-in-bash-3

I would also like to point out that when using Bash 4, a better approach that read -a is using the mapfile builtin

The version of bash (3.2.57) that I have on my Mac does support read -ra (I’ve been depending on it pretty heavily in a build script that I’ve written).
