I wouldn't rule out that there's an error there, but I think the idea is that the growth respiration is calculated based on a daily average but has to be applied every time step (otherwise you'd see a big Ra pulse at midnight that's not in the eddy flux data). Since you don't know the daily C balance until the end of the day you have to use yesterdays. Biologically this isn't perfect since you'll see a bunch of step changes in Rg, but the 1 day lag isn't horribly inaccurate either because phloem transport can take that long.

Based on the huge sensitivity of ED2 to Rg we found in our 2014 JGR-B paper, I had an undergrad spend time last year on parameterizing Rg from biochemical data and we have a new scheme in mind that would be based on the actual amount of leaf, stem, and root growth rather than a single 'tax'. Just need to find the time (or a second undergrad) to finish it up!
