Hi,
You are correct in that there is no HTTP handling performed by the certbot example. It will write the challenge files to the path provided by 'webroot' command like flag. These files would then be served by a primary web server (nginx/apache/etc). This is similar to how the certonly webroot method works in certbot itself: https://certbot.eff.org/docs/using.html#webroot
Give it a crack and let me know how you go. There's no reason this couldn't also function similar to the standalone method in certbot and I might add that as an example in the future.
