The answer here is to think about what localhost means in a container context. Within the Kibana container, localhost is the Kibana container. So if you set SERVER_HOST to localhost, you can only access Kibana over the (virtual) loopback interface from inside the container itself (probably not what anybody wants).

That's why we default SERVER_HOST to "0" so you don't need to set it at all. Because of this, very little configuration is needed, and this docker-compose.yml, for example, works as expected:
