The miscellaneous things at the bottom have been dealt with. Now it's just serialization/deserialization that are left (and maybe unsafe_now(), but that can probably be left as-is)

Serialization is now implemented. With the initial batch of API issues settled, I'm closing this issue. We will likely need some more API changes before we reach MVP, but they should be filed under their own specific issues.
