I isolated the error to the following lines I inherited from another config for startup reasons:
;; Every file opened and loaded by Emacs will run through this list to check
;; for a proper handler for the file, but during startup, it wonโt need any of them.
(defvar file-name-handler-alist-original file-name-handler-alist)
(setq file-name-handler-alist nil)
Removing them eliminated the error, which was:
Debugger entered--Lisp error: (args-out-of-range #<buffer *tar-data *temp**> 513 16463596559)
write-region(#<marker at 513 in *tar-data *temp**> 16463596559 "/home/tim/.emacs.d/elpa/tree-sitter-langs-20201026..." nil :nomessage)

Note:
I can get it working if I manually uninstall/reinstall and require tree-sitter-langs
after startup.

This minimal config works for me: https://gist.github.com/ubolonton/a4cfe85782f40e280570b3ef393ded5f
Can you provide more details to reproduce the issue? For example:
- Your OS and Emacs build, e.g. the result of
(emacs-version)
. - The installation mechanism, e.g. MELPA vs. the custom ELPA.
- The version of Tree-sitter packages before installing, if you already had it.
- The full traceback of the error.
- A minimal
init.el
with the issue.

Interesting -
I'll get to getting the minimal init.el
later today, if it works for you it's probably interplay with some other config I have.
I tried it with both custom ELPA and MELPA (good to see it there now btw!) on an fresh .emacs.d
.
Version GNU Emacs 27.1 (build 1, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.24.22) of 2020-08-13
.
By the way, thanks for responding so quickly, as well as for the package, which otherwise works great for me!
