Hey there,

So we had a little discussion on the repmgr mailing list around this issue.

It appears that there is in fact a --cluster option provided by repmgr that enables to work in such a multi cluster environment. The thing is, I'm not sure it's adequately documented.

For instance, if I try a repgmr --help call the --cluster option is not even mentioned. I'm not sure looking at the code is the most convenient way to get such information.

Moreover and as stated in my previous message, it could also be convenient to be able to make a repmgr --help call in any situation. For instance, in a multi cluster environment such as ours, it's not possible without using the --cluster option or a default postgresql instance (e.g. 9.3/main). I think it would just require to handle the --help option prior to doing anything else.

Thanks a lot.

I'm closing this ticket for two reasons:

  • The repmgr mailling list is the place to discuss these kind of issues
  • This isn't specifically a repmgr problem, but with the way debian manages cluster and the pg apps through the pg_wrappers script.

Your recommendations should be taken with the Debian packaging team. I suggest you file a bug there.

Okay, I looked a bit further into that and realized the --cluster option is in fact a pg_wrapper option and not a repmgr option. Didn't quite get it at first that options were directly passed to pg_wrapper without any modification. My bad, I'm still new with postgresql :)

yet the --help part seems relevant to me. Could be very helpful to be able to use --help in any situation, right? Might be worth another dedicated issue though.
