On closer inspection, it looks like it's just the Ruby Enterprise Edition installer that compiles everything. Still seems unnecessary, though.

It's the combination of nginx compiled with Passenger and REE that gets compiled. I like to compile this because (1) the apt package manager sucks at managing ruby gems and (2) I make several minor adjustments to nginx when I compile it so that the name of the webserver and the version string are not included in the server string -- instead it's just set to a random string of characters. That way clients can't easily tell what webserver you're running. Admittedly this obfuscation is just security through obscurity, but it can't hurt. Finally, I rarely have to reinstall so recompiling whenever I do need to re-flash a box doesn't seem like such a big deal to me.
