Sounds good, I agree. I'm not sure why I left it sitting alone in ~/.config/

I wonder if I should have a single configuration file that it reads or if it would make more sense to just put single config items in files.

I can't think of further config options, but maybe there will be. For that reason, maybe a JSON file for configuration?

and/or INSTALL_DIR

Yep. Don't capitalize the keys though, just source_dir
and install_dir
would be fine.
