There is a server capability you can ask for when you connect called account-notify, where the ircd will send an ACCOUNT message when someone changes accounts, and where * means they logged out.

the problem came from handling it such that the 'state change' affected the
rest of the code in a relatively clean way, that was already handled
internally in the nicktracker, notifying the playertracker was the issue
