Because make
was super easy for me to get up and running in a few minutes :) Make also supports lots of things out of the box (like importantly, detecting file modifications to determine if a task needs to be run). It took 16 lines to do everything I needed.
I know make
isn't great for Windows, but I actually really like the simplicity we have here now. Gulp or Grunt are probably fine too.

There was also a Python dependency I think so I gave up and built it in Linux, something like Gulp would be nice so it could be built using the one tool chain.

There shouldn't be a python dependency... mkdir
, sed
, rm
are the only unix things needed. The other pieces are installed via npm and shouldn't have their own python dependencies.

What about the other npm packages...do they have native code they compile? I might be misremembering this part! I might try and building again on my Windows machine when I'm on it next.

I'm not sure about the dependency tree. Something might need contextify which might need to build binary pieces which might need python. But that's going to be totally outside our control. I would expect Windows+node+npm to handle that however it needs.

Is there any reason not to use CMake if you're on Windows? Make is a relatively common build dependency.

I didn't know about CMake. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case for many people looking at this repo.

I agree we should make this easy for Windows. I'll take a look at
grunt-based and gulp-based solutions. Please consider it to be on the road
map.
