For what it's worth, this technique of checking the extension is also shown in the CoffeeScript example:

I just wanted to mention a similar issue / solution in case others encounter it. My build system processes files with the JSX extension, but the React example, which simply passes the source to ReactTools.transform
, only processes files with the pragma directive.
This worked for me:

process: function(src, path) {
if (path.match(/\.jsx$/)) {
src = '/** @jsx React.DOM */' + src;
}
return ReactTools.transform(src);
}
};
