I played around with this a bit and was able to get one of the empty nodes normalized. But I also realized that I'm pretty in the dark about the "lifecycles" that outline uses, aka WHEN is the right time to do something like normalizing nodes -- could use some help with understanding that. @trueadm I put some time on your calendar for Monday evening to chat about this.

I'd also love to know what are the best ways to debug things like this. I was imagining it'd be useful to have a real-time representation of the view model as I'm stepping through the code to see when things are getting attached/detached, etc. Not sure what the best way to do that is.
