Hey @andymic, I tried compiling rocksdb with gcc version 4.8 on Ubuntu 12.04 and it works:
g++-4.8 -g -Wall -Werror -I. -I./include -std=gnu++11 -DROCKSDB_PLATFORM_POSIX -DOS_LINUX -fno-builtin-memcmp -DROCKSDB_ATOMIC_PRESENT -DSNAPPY -DGFLAGS -DZLIB -DBZIP2 -DHAVE_JEMALLOC -O2 -fno-omit-frame-pointer -momit-leaf-frame-pointer -Woverloaded-virtual -c db/db_impl.cc -o db/db_impl.o
This command for example works, and it has -std=gnu++11 in command line options.
Also, 4.8 release notes don't mention removal of the option: http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.8/changes.html
Are you sure your g++ is 4.8. version?
