If you can find a way that'd be great. Maybe setting RCov::File to RealFile to trick Ruby's lookup mechanism.

You can work around this by clearing the FakeFS, activating the Fake before each test and then deactivating after each test.
Does test/unit have after hooks?

Yes, setup and teardown. You can use the new activate / deactivate code in fakefs/safe to accomplish this now.

I feel remarkably stupid right now ;) Too much rspec.
I've been using it nicely, just make sure you preload any gems which use the FS.
randexp is one such library, Randexp::Dictionary.words is needed before FakeFS.activate!
