I'm assuming you're using SecondScreen with Taskbar integration. I've been working on updating Taskbar with proper support for Android 9, and this version is currently on the Play Store beta channel if you'd like to try that. A SecondScreen update supporting Android 9 will follow in the coming days. Once both updates are out the SecondScreen/Taskbar integration should work the same as it did on Android 8.

So I just tested this with Taskbar 4.0 and SecondScreen 2.8 on my Android Pie device (Essential Phone), and it seems to work as expected. Taskbar becomes the default launcher when a profile is loaded with "Enable Taskbar" and "Change default launcher" checked, and my previous launcher is restored as default when the profile is turned off.

I just checked and I have Taskbar 4.0 and SecondScreen 2.8. I've also signed up for beta for both apps in the google play store. I have "Enable Taskbar" and "Change default launcher" set on my SecondScreen Profile.Yet it is still showing both the taskbar and my launcher at the same time, even if I press the home button again.

My phone is a Pixel XL, and my default home screen is Microsoft Launcher (jugde away, but it allows the app drawer to be segmented by first letter.) I am more than happy to provide you with a full list of SecondScreen and Taskbar settings if you would like. I will also try with the default google home launcher.
