I've tried it in an MWE and it doesn't yield anything reasonable. I would say this is broken bibtex, so I don't think we should be expected to cover it. There is a lot of broken bibtex out there.

ok, agreed. Given that jstor is quite a big site - do you happen to know if they always do this? or is it just this entry that is broken?
