ah, thanks, that’s iteration of bytes behaving differently between the pythons:
[byte for byte in b'ab']yields ['a', 'b'] in python2 and [97, 98] in python3.
i wouldn’t bother to fix python2 compatibility if the current bytes([byte]) weren’t so unobvious.
