All the online information about fontforge (docs, tutorials, videos)
makes huge assumptions about users' familiarity with the GUIs of vector
graphics software. The GIMP had the same problem in the early 2000s.
This is a fair point. It is assumed that people wanting to do font editing
will have general vector graphics editing experience. Perhaps we should
point to other open educational resources that cover this... Do you know of
any?
Please consider adding the following points:
how to fill in a closed contour. Some of the tutorials and videos suggest
pressing the grave/backtick character, but that does nothing (or opens the
glyph corresponding to that keystroke) on my setup
Sounds like you are using an ancient version. Please don't use that Ubuntu
pushed version, is over 2 years old.
whether the curves described are supposed to be stroked (indeed, explain
what that means) into a thicker shape, or whether they represent the
boundary of that shape
The curves are the boundaries. Which page is this?
how to alternate between different kinds of points (corners, tangents,
etc) when creating the edges of a shape
Point menu, or right click the point.
how to close a contour and check that you've done this right
The latest version colors open contours red.
Select the 2 end points and right click one of them, make line.
whether it's possible to remove some of the points on a shape and have
the system automatically adjust; alternatively if you can connect two
disjoint lines into a single one, and if so how
Select points to merge into the contour, Edit, merge.

Ok, please state the minimum viable version of fontforge that can sanely be used with any version of the "designwithfontforge" tutorial that you're prepared to support, and I'll install that, work it out myself, and send you some pull requests

Seriously, the reason I don't know about vector graphics GUIs is that every such programme has this problem, so I've never been able to learn any of them. The only reason I have any chance with the GIMP is I literally bartered lessons in it for a crate of beer

Even latest Ubuntu package is out of date... Gotta build from source or use
a monkeyiq package.
