I don't think that's possible if you want the page to open in a new tab. The Selfoss can only tell the browser to open the site in question, and that's it. However, if Selfoss opened a new separate window, it may be able to hide that window, like a "pop-under" ad, but I doubt that is a requested behavior.

In Firefox I got a setting called "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately", I don't know if a similar setting exists in Chrome.

I also think that would be a wrong behavior. The normal use case is to switch to the clicked link. In Chrome and Firefox you can open a link in a new background tab by pressing the "Strg" key during clicking on the link. Thats what I do when I want to open a link in background.

I was guessing that this is a browser issue - I had a plugin for Chrome that accomplished that. I really liked that featuer because it let me go through my feeds and open all I want to read afterwards in new tabs...

Thanks for the clarification!

I implemented a config option open_in_background_tab=1 that allows this, though it does not work in Chromium: #1354
