This is a great question, and I have been thinking about this a bit.

My initial thoughts lead me to a phantomjs-enabled poller, simply inheriting from the basepoller, and controlling a spawned phantomjs process. phantomjs handles both http and https seamlessly, so there is no need for two distinct content pollers.

If there was the need for two distinct pollers, I'd probably extract the http and https logic from the current pollers into specific service classes, and inject these classes (or their methors) into the HttpPoller and HttpContentPoller on one side, and to the HttpsPoller and HttpsContentPoller on the other side.

The only difficulty lies in the automated detection of the poller type in the dashboard check form, which needs to be adapted to allow a manual selection of the check type (à la pingdom).

The patternMatcher plugin (see #155, #158) implements that feature. Done!
