In order to get this to build or (perhaps more importantly) run on linux the project would have to switch from .NetF to .NetCore (probably .Net 6+).

That is a non-trivial process for an application like this; some parts of the applications are still .NetF2 projects. Some dependencies don't have .NetCore/.NetStandard releases, or if they do may have incompatible APIs. Plugin handling would be different if dynamic loading is involved, due to changes there.
Perhaps one of the biggest problems is going to be switching away from WPF - even the .NetCore versions of it only run on Windows. A new UI/Application framework would need to be chosen (MAUI/Avalonia?). This would require all the frontend to be completely rewritten, plus likely some of the backend to take into account those changes.

Moving to .NetCore has other benefits regardless (for instance, a large chunk of the current unsafe code can likely be moved to new safe variants).
