I think the reason I was waiting for the ALB lookup to respond might have been related to a race condition—in my testing, sometimes the ALB wasn't actually online/functional until a minute or two had passed, and so if I grabbed the hostname from the ingress resource, and put that in the Route53 record, it could fail.
That may have just been me encountering a bug in AWS's Ingress resource provisioning at the time, though, and maybe that's been fixed!

I refuse to believe that there has ever been a bug in anything AWS has produced... ever... 😂
Fair point, and it's older code now. I'm also not in a position where I need the ALB to be immediately available. I'll keep your experience in mind, though, if I run into such a condition.
