Joind.in looks like a site dedicated to conferences, how would that work with GetTogether which focus on smaller, local community events?

For me it's about proving delivery and pedigree in talking at events - it's used extensively by PHP User Groups around the world.

Could it be used for things like weekly local meetups?

It could. ;)

At the moment the default is that events are approved by a number of volunteers (to prevent spam).

But there is also a way to set a user as an approved user. Events created by such an approved user will then be "autoapproved". We use that for usergroups for example that meet on a much more regular basis than conferences. And that should also work for meetups that meet on a weekly basis.

Though for me the main question is, how the integration between GetTogether and joind.in should look like…

Joind.in is mainly focussed around feedback for the speakers. All the other nifty gadgets evolved around that as they made getting the feedback easier. For getting the feedback the talks need to be created on joind.in. From what I've seen on meetup that's not one of the features of them, and especially the feedback was rather generic. So adding joind.in as an option for getting feedback shouldn't collide with the main goals of GetTogether. And as joind.in uses an API it should be possible to integrate those functions into GetTogether without too much issues…
