@Herriau if you take a look at the PR above, it's recommending the experimental GlimmerX, which looks to be another iteration on the GlimmerJS idea. From what I've read and seen, I think the idea of having standalone usage remains something folks are interested in, but the original GlimmerJS idea (which also heavily relied on the module unification folder layout approach) looks unlikely to land.
