Accept-Encoding
in an HTTP request simply indicates that a client can support the feature. It doesn't guarantee that the server will use it. So you can implement it without worrying about one endpoint supporting it but another endpoint not supporting it. That said, I have no idea if Google's API infrastructure supports it or not. My guess would be that it does, but that's just a guess.
As for flags, my feeling is it should be always on and the client should always advertise its ability to support gzip encoding as long as the appropriate middleware is present. If there's going to be a flag, it should be on by default, but frankly I'd rather just delegate it entirely to Faraday.
