I've not been able to reproduce this behavior in Colab after running all of the cells.

Can you provide more information about the environment you're running the notebook on?

Also, try changing the cell

! pip3 install --upgrade --user google-cloud-aiplatform

To be:

%pip install --upgrade --user google-cloud-aiplatform

The change in #365 can also fix this issue. Seems to be either that the protobuf library isn't installing correctly or that there's a bug in the default installed version of the library. Asking @komaljoshi-SSK for clarity.

Edit: This seems to be a Qwiklabs/Skills boost specific issue.

User Managed Notebook Instance deployed in Qwiklabs was using an old VM image, which caused Python dependency conflicts with the latest version of Vertex AI.

PR CloudVLab/terraform-lab-foundation#353 should fix the issue once the change rolls out to Qwiklabs.
