I cannot seem to generate them with Makefile (make manifests) either, but am probably doing something wrong?

Building/Deploying
autoneg was written with kubebuilder, and you can read about how to run/package/deploy it on the kubebuilder documentation page.

This controller doesn't have any CRDs, so you can "make run" to test it out in your cluster (that your kube context points to), and then run the last two commands on that doc page to build and deploy.

Regarding overall use:

  1. As the controller will try and register the NEGs with a backend service, the backend service must already exist. I'd expect that you would create/update that service in some sort of deployment pipeline.
  2. I have not actually tried creating a GCLB which uses the backend service that autoneg operates on - my use case was to use the backend service for Traffic Director. I would imagine you could manually create a loadbalancer and map the backendservice to it in the same deployment pipeline.
