Good question: One thing that comes to my mind is to disable cache cleanup for old versions, e.g. by adding a version check to cache cleanup script.
Of course upgrading Gradle version is probably the best option in the end.
There is a coincidence that Gradle 8.8 artifact transforms caches were moved from shared cache caches/transforms-4
to version specific cache caches/<gradle-version>/transforms
, see: #28535.
So version <= 8.7 should not break Gradle 8.8 artifact transform cache if that is a concern.
