After some playing around the I can get the following to work as long my dict is only strings ... If any of the properties are for GQL Ints or Floats I get the issues.

(Python isn't my forte)

 an_item = {
            "string_prop": "hello"
        }

apply_mutation = gql('''
mutation apply($id: String!, $items: DiscountItemInput!) {
         applyDiscount(
             applyObject: {
              orderId: $id
              storeId: 2             
              items: 
                 $items
             
            }
          ) {
           ... list of fields to be returned
          }

        params = {

Shouldn't this be $items: [DiscountItemInput!]?
