Although nearly everything works in e.g. Emacs 23, font lock is one thing that requires 24+, because I'm using some regexp feature only available starting in 24. Without it, you get exactly the problem you describe.

Ah yes I forgot to specify a version number. I'm using 23.4 but you figured that out already. Thanks!

Well I just realized the README is misleading. It says 23.4 is OK. I think I added that when I fixed the only other problem I know about. But at the time forgot that the font-lock is still wonky unless you have 24.
I'll update the README.
