Hey, I agree, but it could be hit or miss... Sadly, some browsers will execute the page's onbeforeunload and onunload handlers when a mailto: link is clicked, so we actually open all mailto's in a new window at my company. Also, you have to be careful of users' browsers that are set up to point mailto: links to a webmail account, in which case the user will be redirected away from your site and into, say, gmail.

I'll see if I can get around to adding this anyway though to give people an option. Unless you perhaps want to submit a pull request? :)

Hmm okay good points, especially if it's true that browsers set to using gmail/webmail wouldn't open a new tab without target=_blank

Probably the best way to handle this would be some sort of more generic callback function which would make it possible for users to customize behavior like this without messing with library internals.
