The problem seems to be that the backtick notation is not recognized with surrounding characters.

Will fix this when I or guillermo tackle the issue list, even though I'm surprised this doesn't work.

It seems to work when the surrounding character is punctuation. For example, simply quoting from my initial post: Variants, has a comma after it, and it renders fine. Maybe it's the alphanumerics that cause trouble when directly surrounding backtick notation?

TestingTesting <-- seems to work

names <-- also works. No idea why that doesn't want to behave in the docs.

The docs are written in restructured text, which uses a similar but not the same syntax as markdown or GFM (github flavored markdown), so you can't draw any similarities in behavior.
