Hmmm.

I feel like this is just going to be a "you're fucked and your best bet is to use jQuery" kind of thing
which is fine for me

but if anyone is going to write something like that, it's gonna be you. :) because you can do it correctly.

Not at all the shimmable subset of DOM4 is pretty large. The main problem right now is that there is no production ready shim yet, working on that.

And if you ignore IE6/7 the shimmable subset goes way up. And if you ignore IE8 it goes way up again.

The other question is how do we partition "DOM" into multiple sections. For example classList falls under DOM4.

I use my ES5-DOM-shim in my own projects. Of course, it need more tests. But all major bugs was fixed.
Known issues:

  1. Same-domain limitation (can be solve only on server)
  2. Incompatibility with http://code.google.com/p/ie7-js/ [working on it]
    For now, I can't guarantee production ready status, but i am close to it.
