I'm a bit hesitant to point at anything but the official upstream. On the other hand, having dealt with a ton of flaky upstream sources, I feel the pain. I wonder if it makes sense to offer a cache of source artifacts used to build packages in core?

I think 99% of the time we really want to point to the official upstream. There are some cases where thats totally not possible. In this case though, I think changing the pkg_source to a different target because of crappy behavior of the upstream repository is kind of a tough call. For now I think we're probably unlikely to switch to optimize for the upstream repo failures though if it continues to be problematic we can revisit.

Thank you for bringing the issue up and my apologies for taking this long to respond. Going forward we're going to see significantly higher activity levels in this repository.
