We will do this closer to the release date to make it easier to merge pull requests into the v7.0 branch.

Also, keep the API directory to make the distinction clear. Or find another marker.

I'm not sure about the api direectory. It keeps the distinction clear in the source code, but the distinction doesn't exist for our users who use precompiled JARs. I'd rather the source code better reflected what users experience when trying to autocomplete in their IDEs.

On the other hand, have the API marked in some way (not necessarily in a directory) keeps our options open and makes it clear what the core protocol is.

Currently the core protocol is defined by interfaces, for code that wants to use Hamcrest, and by abstract classes for code that wants to extend Hamcrest.
