When using HandBrake, I suspect most people may just want a faithful rip...i.e. source resolution to match the target resolution. It would be really nice to have a fast track button which does just this. It would avoid pointless errors such as ripping a 720p to 1080p which just results in a much larger filesize with no real improvement in resolution.
This is how HandBrake already behaves. All presets have a "Resolution Limit". Key word being "Limit". This is the maximum output resolution the file can be. If the source is lower, the output will be lower unless you explicity enable upscaling (which is off by default as it's considered bad practice in 98% of cases)
A related enhancement would be to state the source in terms of user selectable outputs e.g. if source is 720p, then state 720p (or the closest resolution) so that it is easier for user to select a target output of 720p. Just providing the resolution as 1280 x 720 can leave the user guessing.
The limit is already defined in descriptive terms.
Source and Output resolutions must be displayed as other options have an impact on them so users need to be able to see them as their exact values.
For example:
No accidental upscale.
If your doing the same thing repeatably, save whatever settings you prefer as a preset. Set the preset and default. After which, any time you want to encode simply scan the source and add to the queue. That's it.
