does it work with the subtitles and conversion system already in place?

About the format, I verified that both the browser and the chormecast support mkv, I don't know in which case the conversion would make sense. I haven't tested the subtitles, but it would be nice to implement from opensubtitles.org what do you think?

mkv is just a container format, there are only a handful of codecs that you can use in the browser/chromecast/appletv and you often need to convert the audio. The project already integrates opensubtitles as well as ASS to sync them up.

From what I've seen, you can do the transcoding using real-time with ffmpeg,
