I've used this patch in the past. Here's a link to it. That patch wasn't perfect, but I think it's worth looking at for hexchat.

Thanks. I've used a patch before for this, but this time would rather have it be checked out by the maintainers for them to decide. :)

I applied this patch both on Windows and Linux, but no "true" transparency (except what we had already). What else is required? What change "voided" it?

I do not remember. The ancient xChat patch is here: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=20275 . It enabled true transparency / compositing via https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/i686/xcompmgr.
