Presumably this is not an issue with httpie but the way you invoke it (the special characters get interpreted by your shell before httpie gets to see them). Try putting the URL in single quotes:

$ http GET 'http://abc.com?query=A|B|C&key=1234'

from httpie.

Yes, its a mistake with the way I was invoking it. Quotes sorts it out (I was including quotes in the curl invocations, but left it out in the httpie ones. oh hum, one of those days.)
