How strange! I haven't seen this.

I will take a look and see if we do anything that might strip off the scheme.

Have you tried doing raw requests against the Etsy api? If you do verbose requests with curl or a similar tool there should be a header with a request ID in it. If you're able to identify a request with the problem you can give the request id to the Etsy team (either by emailing them or on the mailing list) and they're usually really helpful about finding/fixing issues that are on their end.

I've been lazy, and have solved it locally, by appending the scheme if it is missing.
At the next opportunity, I'll investigate further following your excellent strategy suggestion.
