You are correct that .abignore does not support excluding folders with dedicated syntax.
You can approximate the effect by using a rule similar to folder/*/ which will exclude all containing data. Please refer to the documentation of minimatch for the full syntax.

You are also correct that the .abignore rules are underdocumented. We will address this issue. In the mean time, you can check our unit tests for ideas how the rules work. Refer to path filrtering tests.
