Thanks @ulange-eso-org for the new set of reports and suggested fixes, and sorry for not attending them until now, as I was on leave this week. I've addressed all the issues (I think) and have pushed all commits to the uwe-fixes branch. Let me know if you're happy with them, and whether you'd want to merge the branch back to master (or if you'd rather wait a bit more).
In the meanwhile I also fixed the CI builds (the requests package, which we use, issued a new release where they removed support for 2.7/3.6) and merged that to the uwe-fixes branch too, so the CI runs should be green now.
