+1 too. Here using vim-instant-markdown for viewing (and improve) a documentation directories tree. And its usability is rather lowered without images nor local links.
Maybe pull @frnsys implementation? Or @matthijskooijman's #21 which seems to be clean and offers wider support?

I just submitted a PR which adds this support to instant-markdown-d which is the server for this plugin:
instant-markdown/instant-markdown-d#14
Seems to work fine for relative paths!
