Basically in the far left column of the BW matrix, we just have all the characters in our text sorted in alphabetical order. So it's easy to get say the interval of 5's (markers for first site) because they will come after all 0,1,2,3,4s. Now for the 1s say, the interval of 1s in this left BW column gives us all the 1s in our text and we use ranks to subtract a subinterval that contains just the 1s that follow the current pattern to the left. But we don't need to do this for the markers because be want to skip them all so knowing just the entire interval of 5s will suffice.
