All named yields are cleared when a new route is run. You can see the code here: https://github.com/EventedMind/meteor-iron-router/blob/master/lib/client/client_router.js#L67.

We figured that most of the time, people wouldn't want to call clear() manually.

But if you have static content that doesn't ever change, you can either put it in your layout, or in the body and render the router to a specific location.

Note: renderRouter is a helper that was added on the dev branch but not released yet. But it's an easy helper to add if you're not working on dev.
