Block math does not render inline about quartz

I believe #607 can be described as

Block math only gets rendered if I use $$\begin{array}{cc}1 & 0 \\0 & 1\end{array}$$ over multiple lines

But this issue is

Matrices cannot be rendered inline. i.e. without block math

They do have in common that the issue is most likely with the underlying math rendering package, and not something that quartz should be responsible for. Due to my own lack of familiarity with quartz choice of renderization packages, are you @jackyzha0 aware of which tool should be responsible for resolving this issue?
