default behavior among available msgpack encoders is to produce an msgpack array for object-like structure.
for finer control, you can always use lower level functions such as pack_map, pack_array, pack_ext, etc interleaved with generic pack.
one thing this library really lacks is a good documentation of it's lower level functions.

Yes, but the thing is, the high level api is really useful, and I would like to stick to that. Could another option be to turn -d:msgpack_obj_to_map into a runtime flag of MsgStream?
