Thanks. Which version are you using? Daily ppa?

It looks like other people are having trouble with this one too.
RedNotebook would close as soon as I started it. If I deleted the
~/.rednotebook directory, then it would run. But when I tried opening
one of my regular journals it crashed again.

I checked the ~/.rednotebook/rednotebook.log file and found out that the
app was crashing when any of the TXT files in the journal contained
"!!python/unicode ".

I don't know about anyone else, but all the files I had with this
"!!python/unicode " business were from 2011 or earlier. And it was most
of those older files, but not all of them. I then used the gedit editor
to replace all instances of "!!python/unicode " with a null string ("").
It took a while because I had to check every single TXT file, and I've
been using RedNotebook for some time for different topical journals.

Anyway... Once I had removed ALL instances of "!!python/unicode " from
each TXT file, RedNotebook then worked just fine for those directories
that were crashing.

I hope that helps someone out there. I have no idea why or how this
problem began, though.

You're Welcome!

I'm using the Daily PPA. I just had a quick look; it's version 1.7.1.

This problem just happened yesterday. It just seemed to happen on my
desktop computer, running on Xubuntu, but not my laptop or netbook,
which are both running on Lubuntu.

Thanks for the report, it seems you just saved a lot of people lots of
trouble, thanks! I introduced a change some days ago that will prevent
people from being able to open their journals. Thanks to you I can
revert it, before the version is released.

No problem!

I was surprised I was able to find the problem. But the contents of
~/.rednotebook/rednotebook.log helped me figure out the problem.

Besides, a lot of other people have helped me with their fixes, so I
guess it was my turn to solve at least one app problem!
